Understand, treat and prevent: Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting - Manual for Professionals

In parallel to the efforts aimed at the abandonment of FGM/C, it is necessary to address the problems and consequences that affect the physical, psychosexual and reproductive health of women and girls who have suffered this practice. In this context, primary care professionals in health, social services and education, due to their proximity to families and the possibility of a sustained approach over time, are placed in an ideal position to carry out preventive work.

Precisely to these professionals is directed the new publication of Wassu Foundation and the Interdisciplinary Group for the Prevention and Study of Harmful Traditional Practices (IGPS / HTP), Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting - Manual for Professionals (2017), which seeks to facilitate understanding, care and prevention of FGM/C. This manual proposes that primary care professionals include FGM/C in their work, as a topic to be addressed from education for health, in order to generate attitudes that encourage the abandonment of the practice.

The manual is the result of a conscious, reflective and rigorous interdisciplinary work, focused on the challenges of preventive intervention, which requires awareness and specific training in FGM/C.

The publication has the support of the Obra Social "laCaixa", the General Direction of Migrations of the Ministry of Employment and Social Security and the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF).
