Fold-out Poster (updated 2016)

Designed as a tool for FGM/C preventive intervention it supports professionals on their direct attention with families and Sub-Saharan communities. The Fold-out Poster allows a comprehensive approach on features related to FGM/C, the countries where it is practiced, the associated beliefs, the health consequences and the legal implications.

It is available in two languages, Spanish and English, simplifying the communication between Spanish professionals and English speaking migrants.

Preventive agreement

The extensive ethnographic research conducted in the regions of The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau and Senegal, revealed that these societies are built on gerontocratic roots, with high respect to the elders of the community. This understanding was decisive for the success of the preventive work which was being conducted in Spain. In 1998, while working with a family to prevent FGM/C to be performed on their girlchild during her travelling to The Gambia for holidays, the team acknowledged that although the parents were willing to protect the child, they could not challenge the power of the elders of their community of origin, who were the ones having the last word in all decisions concerning community members. In response, the team developed a letter stating the legal consequences for the parents if the girlchild was subjected to FGM/C, which was signed and stamped by the health professional accompanying the family. In this way, parents did not have to confront elders, as the decision of not performing FGM/C was not theirs, but an order given by another authority. The success of this letter led the team to test it in other 11 cases, from 6 different villages, always with good results, starting to be used in the Comarca del Vallès Oriental (Barcelona).

The preventive agreement is nowadays a document and tool available both for professionals and families travelling to their country of origin. It is designed to be used in primary health care centres, specifically in paediatrics, when there is a journey planned to a country where FGM/C is practiced. In this agreement, designed as a letter, families agree to take care of the health of their daughters during the travelling period, following the instructions of international vaccination centres and avoiding the genital mutilation of the girls. Professionals should read the Guide for Preventive Agreement before its implementation.
